Ready- Let’s get started- Here’s Number 10 of the 10 Best Ways to Recruit and Hire the Right Ophthalmologist for Your Ophthalmology Practice
Say you’re an Ophthalmology practice and you’re thinking about recruiting an Ophthalmologist for your practice. Maybe succession or growth planning. Perhaps your numbers have been trending upward nicely, or maybe there’s a services gap in your medical service area. Perhaps another area physician is close to retirement, or maybe one of your own Ophthalmology partners is getting to that stage in his or her career where they’d like to begin winding down a little over the next several years. You’re ready to start thinking about recruiting a new physician for your practice. Sounds great- How- then, do you do this? How do you know if it’s time to hire, or time to begin thinking about bringing on another ophthalmologist. There are a lot of questions to think about. In fact for a lot of you, especially our smaller practices- small and mid-sized groups, or even solo practices- hiring an ophthalmologist is not part of your DNA. It’s not something you’re made for. You may have done this once or a few times, but not anytime recently and times and technology have really changed the way physician recruitment happens--- So what do you do, and where do you begin. Well, here’s a good place to start.
Never “Buy” an Ophthalmology candidate for your practice. This is really tough to do- or not to do especially if you’re in a rural area. I mean we think- "Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures" – Right? Wrong. It’s absolutely true that an attractive, equitable compensation package is essential to hiring an Ophthalmologist. But, don’t sell the farm to “Buy” your candidates with outlandish starting salaries, signing bonuses, relocation and productivity incentives. Oftentimes, practices that are desperate to recruit a new Ophthalmologists will hook marginally interested physicians with incredibly high salaries and bonuses. This is a no-no. Don’t do this. First of all, you’ll spend a lot of time, money and energy screening ophthalmologists who see your advertisement and are just “looking”. Then, one or two of those inquiries will be compelled to learn more, not because of the long term opportunity, but because of the near-term financial gain for them. You’ll end up screening too many uninterested Ophthalmologists or worse yet, you’ll bring in unqualified interviewees in person at great cost to you. You don’t want to screen, phone interview, and then interview in person scores of doctors who have been baited by the dollars instead of being attracted to the overall opportunity. If you continue on this path, one or two of your interviewing Ophthalmologists will be compelled to make a poor job decision based on an emotional impulse decision. Remember, you want a long term hire. You want someone who will grow the practice, with a real ownership mentality. Keep in mind that your goal isn’t to hire someone. Your goal is to hire someone long term! Would you like to go through the same process 2 or 3 years from now? You really want to identify and hire an Ophthalmologist who is motivated to find a career fit- ideally a Partnership opportunity. So put your best foot forward; construct an attractive offer that’s fair, but don’t “buy” the candidate. Learn more by connecting with OjO!
